Washington, D.C., December 7, 2010 – Harris Teeter opens in NoMa today, after more than two years of anticipation and excitement from the surrounding community. The new 50,000-square-foot store at 1201 First Street, NE, will anchor NoMa’s growing retail offerings and provide grocery options for an underserved corridor along North Capitol Street and in Northeast Washington, D.C.

- 5:30 pm – Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
- 8 p.m. to midnight: Harris Teeter is open for regular shopping
- 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Taste of Teeter: Shoppers will be able to sample a wide variety of wine and products available in the new store. This event is free and open to the public.
Wednesday, December 8:
- Harris Teeter opens at 8 a.m.
Thursday, December 9 and following:
- Regular hours are 7 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
- Pharmacy hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
“Harris Teeter will continue the transformation of NoMa this year, as more than 5,000 people have moved to the neighborhood to live and work since June,” said NoMa BID President Liz Price. “This high-end, full-service grocery store accentuates NoMa’s momentum as DC’s fastest growing neighborhood.”
This is Harris Teeter’s third and largest location in Washington, D.C., and NoMa’s first grocery store. Harris Teeter will hire more than 180 employees, also providing a welcome job boost to the NoMa area. The NoMa location will offer expanded departments, a full-service pharmacy, an extensive wine and imported beer selection, and catering and lunch options to serve the office population of 38,000 daytime employees. Shoppers in urban areas shop more frequently, so the store heavily emphasizes fresh foods, items-to-go, prepared foods and perishable items.
NoMa’s streets grow busier each day, as more than 70,000 square feet of retail space has opened or leased in NoMa this year:
- Potbelly Sandwich Works opened in September.
- Georgetown Valet opened November 8.
- TD Bank opened at First and N Streets, NE, December 2.
- Harris Teeter opens officially December 8.
- Early in 2011, Roti Mediterranean Grill, CVS and 7-11 will all open in NoMa.
The first phase of Constitution Square, developed by StonebridgeCarras, totals 1.6 million SF of mixed-use space located adjacent to the New York Avenue Metro station at First and M Streets, NE. One Constitution Square pre-leased all of its 330,000 SF of office space to the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) for headquarters swing space. Two Constitution Square pre-leased all of its 575,000 SF of office space to GSA for Department of Justice offices. In addition to the 80,000 square feet of street-level retail space, the first phase also includes The Flats 130, a residential building with 440 apartments, and a 204-key Hilton Garden Inn Hotel that opens in April. In 2008, the District provided a key tax incentive to assist with the cost of providing 150 parking spaces for the Harris Teeter store.
In November, StonebridgeCarras announced plans to break ground in May on Phase II of Constitution Square, which will include 345,000 square feet of office space and 203 residential units.
