Washington, D.C., January 28, 2013 – Neighbor, friend, advocate and ANC Commissioner Mark Dixon died on January 23. He served for many years as Commissioner for ANC 6C02 and the newly redistricted ANC 6E, the area including Sursum Corda, Temple Courts and west of NoMa. The staff and board of the NoMa Business Improvement District express our sympathies to Mr. Dixon’s family.
Bruce Baschuk, co-founder and former Chairman of the NoMa Business Improvement District, relayed this message to Mr. Dixon’s family:
“In my capacity as the head of J Street Development and as Chairman of the NoMa BID, I met Mark when we began to invest in the NoMa market and presented our plans to the ANC he chaired at the time. Mark was kind enough to introduce me to a number of people who were doing good works on behalf of the residents in his District, including the folks at Mt. Airy Baptist Church.
“We maintained a good relationship over the years as he continued his efforts to improve the lives of his neighbors. If ANC 6C had a Mayor, it was Mark. His unselfish devotion to the people was obvious from the moment we met. He would contact me from time to time to seek advice or support for someone or something who needed it, especially for the kids; but never for himself.
“He will be sorely missed by all of us who were lucky to know him and his presence in the community will be felt for many years.”
Robin-Eve Jasper, President of the NoMa Business Improvement District, wrote these words:
“I met Mark eight years ago when I was working with a group of property owners and community members to establish the NoMa Business Improvement District. We got to know each other pretty well and I could count on Mark for advice, consistent engagement and good conversation. He was a terrific advocate for the community. Mark was level-headed and had great common sense; a quality I value deeply and find is less common than one might hope.
“I was in touch with Mark from time-to-time after I left NoMa to work for the DC government. I was moved and encouraged by the pride he expressed in my accomplishments. That was personally very important to me, but also I believe demonstrates the kind of giving person that Mark was.
“When I returned to the NoMa BID in October of 2011, Mark was still there faithfully representing the community in public safety and other matters. It was a pleasure to see him there and work with him again.
“It also needs to be said that Mark exhibited remarkable fortitude in the face of his physical challenges. As hard as it must have been to go through his treatments and remain mobile and engaged, he never let it defeat him and always brought lots of positive energy to his many undertakings.
“Mark was a very special man and I feel very privileged to have known him. He will be sorely missed. My sympathies go out to his family. I also want to express to them my gratitude for Mark’s work to making our corner of the world a better place.”
Services
Services for Mr. Dixon will be held at Mt. Airy Baptist Church, 1100 North Capitol Street, NE, with the Rev. West as Pastor. A wake will be held Friday, February 1, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Homegoing Service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013, with a viewing from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. More details about the services here.
